Mission Statement: 

The Department of History at the University of Illinois Chicago seeks to explore and understand the past and learn from a diversity of voices. The department provides space for students, faculty, and the community to cultivate the critical thinking and communication skills needed to develop cultural competencies, practice historical empathy, and help promote democracy and greater justice in our communities, our nation, and our world. Graduate Mission Statement:

UIC’s doctoral program in History is dedicated to training professional historians who conduct independent research, teach and mentor a diverse student body, and collaborate with multiple communities in higher education settings and beyond. Our graduates acquire the skills and understanding together and interpret historical evidence, produce historical narratives, and become responsible stewards of the past. Doctoral students work alongside established scholars and teach students from all backgrounds at our public research university, whose diversity mirrors its urban setting. We offer a professional, challenging, and personalized program that educates our students and prepares them for academic and non-academic positions worldwide. (Approved October 2016)
