On Wednesday, February 28, UIC’s Department of History hosted ninth graders from Farragut Career Academy in Little Village at UIC to discuss climate change and deliberate policy in a Model UN format for the second year in a row.
Born out of a collaboration with UIC Teaching of History alumnus Cary Bolnick, who works as a World Studies teacher and History Department Chair at Farragut, and Julie Peters’ "HIST 419: Teaching Civics Literacy" class, the service-learning project served to educate both HIST 419 students and Farragut ninth graders on the four pillars of civics learning as stipulated in the Illinois Civics Mandate: (1) instruction on democratic institutions, (2) deliberation of current and controversial issues, (3) simulation of democratic processes, and (4) service-learning.
Several UIC undergraduate students volunteered to help make the event go off as a sparkling success.
