Honors and Awards

Departmental Distinction Heading link

The department offers the following two options for obtaining departmental distinction:

  1. Students who earn a 3.50 all-university grade point average and 3.75 GPA in all courses taken in the Department of History at UIC will be awarded departmental distinction. [A=4.0]
  2. Students who earn a 3.4 all-university GPA and a 3.6 GPA in all courses taken in the Department of History at UIC may choose to complete an honors thesis while enrolled in History 398. To qualify for honors, the student must earn at least a grade of B in History 398. [A=4.0]

The Department of History also offers the following undergraduate awards:

The Adeline Barry Davee and Ruth Dunbar Davee Scholarship

The Davee Scholarship provides full cost of attendance at UIC from entry through graduation for up to five years.  Recipients must enter UIC with, and maintain, at least a 3.0 GPA.  It is given to a student majoring in History (usually an incoming freshman).  One award is typically given each year.  Students need not apply for this award.  All eligible applicants will be considered by the award committee.

The Gordon Lee Goodman Award for Distinction in Undergraduate Studies

The Gordon Lee Goodman Award for Distinction in Undergraduate Studies was endowed by friends and relatives of the late Gordon L. Goodman, a former professor of British History at UIC, after his untimely death. It is awarded annually in his memory to “the outstanding undergraduate History major.” Selection is made through a process of faculty nomination and vote. Beyond the distinction of the award itself, the award furnished $800 toward the education expenses of the recipient.

The Lillian Edinger Scholarship

The Lillian Edinger Scholarship recognizes outstanding achievement among UIC’s History majors. Selection is made through a process of faculty nomination and vote. Beyond the distinction of the award itself, the award furnishes $500 toward the educational expenses of the recipient.

The Deirdre N. McCloskey Prize

The Deirdre N. McCloskey Prize recognizes the top two papers written by a History major in History 300. Selection is made through a process of faculty nomination and vote of the prize committee. Beyond the distinction of the award itself, the award furnishes $250 to the winner, and $150 to the runner up.

The UIC Cheryl Ganz History Undergraduate Student Award

The UIC Cheryl Ganz Undergraduate Student Award, endowed by Cheryl Ganz, is meant to help finance research for undergraduate history projects. It is currently administered through the LAS Undergraduate Research Initiative.
